Creative Connections places professional artists in schools on year-long residencies. This innovative programme aims to:

Aims and objectives of the project

• Creative Connections aims to stimulate fresh approaches to teaching, learning and engaging with contemporary art in schools.

• With a focus on improving student’s visual literacy, creative skills, understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art Creative Connections aims to increase student’s motivation to achieve, particularly at exam level, while encouraging an increased awareness of the role of contemporary artists within society, through interaction with living artists.

• Placing artists in schools Creative Connections aims to foster creative collaboration between artists and teachers, giving teachers the opportunity to extend their engagement with modern and contemporary art, and through regular forums and inset sessions, Creative Connections aims to support the professional development of both teachers and artists.

• Using exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery as the inspiration for new creative work the project seeks to encourage the use of the gallery as a resource for teaching, by building relationships with local schools, and supporting local teachers in their delivery of the Art National Curriculum.

• Building on the success of the previous years of Creative Connections, we aim to further current research in the fields of Art and Design and Gallery Education. We aim to facilitate a shift in thinking and practice amongst teachers, engaging them in more critical and discursive pedagogies.

Since 2002 Creative Connections has given:

• over 2000 secondary schools students aged 12 –18 from 25 schools in East London the opportunity to work with an artist in residence

• 28 teachers Inset training and creative dialogue with 25 artists

• over 1000 parents, families, teachers and educationalists the opportunity to visit exhibitions showcasing work from Creative Connections

• over 100 artists, teachers and educationalists the chance to take part the Whitechapel symposium Schools as Sites for Exchange, Experimentation and Intervention

• Schools participating in Creative Connections scope to significantly improve art exam results at GCSE level

‘I have seen a positive impact on the GCSE results of the schools
