||The Director of the Whitechapel Gallery, Iwona Blazwick, is awarded an OBE for services to art in the New Year’s Honours List 2008.
Iwona Blazwick became Director of the Whitechapel Gallery in June 2001, and has presented major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art including Liam Gillick (2002), Cristina Iglesias (2003), Gerhard Richter (2004), Faces in the Crowd – Picturing Modern Life from Manet to Today (2004), Paul McCarthy (2005), Back to Black (2005) and David Adjaye (2006). She is also involved in numerous publishing, talks, education and community arts programmes as well as being a critic and broadcaster.
The announcement of the honour comes at an exciting time for the Whitechapel, as Iwona Blazwick leads the Gallery through an
important expansion doubling the size of the building and due to open
in Spring 2009.
Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel Gallery, said; ‘This is a tremendous honour. It has been a great privilege and pleasure to be associated with the Whitechapel Gallery which has pioneered modern and contemporary art for over 100 years. I feel an immense gratitude to the artists, thinkers, colleagues and friends whose help and support have made the exhibitions I have been associated with possible. I now look forward with excitement to the expansion of the Whitechapel opening in 2009 and all the new possibilities for showcasing art and ideas that will bring.’
