spacer Press Release: Archive Adventures for East London Kids
January 2008

The Whitechapel Gallery has taken some of the treasures from its 100 year old archive directly to school children this week in order for them to learn more about the history of their local area. The ‘Archive Adventures’ Programme, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Exemplar Developments LLP, will enable over 1000 school children in East London to explore and investigate the history of the area. The project will be disseminated to schools nationally and internationally through a website currently being developed to complement the project.

Last week the Year 6 class at St. Anne’s School enjoyed a week of Archive Adventures, working alongside artists and community historians in order to piece together the relationship between art and life during the 20th Century.

Using photographs, press cuttings, maps and stories from the Whitechapel archives, the children produced a variety of imaginative work, from period outfits to postcards from the past. The children were also able to visit the V&A Museum of Childhood to further explore the history of the area and produced some period toys of their own.

The week climaxed with an exhibition of the children’s work, showcasing everything that the children had learnt and produced during their week, with parents and teachers invited along to have a look. The children’s work will be displayed at a special exhibition in the newly extended Whitechapel Gallery in Spring 2009.

Melanie Dymond, Curator of Education Programmes at the White Chapel Gallery who worked, alongside an artist and historian, with the children during the week said, “Archive Adventures helps children to understand more about their local area and the important role art has played in its history. It’s great to see them talking so enthusiastically about their art work and what they have learnt”.

Connor Crofts, a year 6 student said about his week of archive adventures, “I liked going to the childhood museum and making olden day clothes. Setting up the gallery was really fun.” Fellow classmate, Andre Salgado also said “I have really loved this week.”

Sponsor Exemplar Developments LLP, is currently developing Goodman’s Fields, which is the largest single development site in Aldgate and has the potential to deliver a vibrant and sustainable new quarter of London including new homes and spaces for work, play and relaxation.
