The five host boroughs of the 2012 Olympics announce new £40,000 art award

CREATE - the cultural partnership of the Five Host Boroughs – today announced a new £40,000 participatory art award. The CREATE Art Award encourages artists living and working in those boroughs to create a temporary or permanent artwork that engages and enriches the lives of the people living around them.

As well as being the new home of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Five Host Boroughs – Greenwich, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest – are home to thousands of artists, including several Turner Prize nominees and artists of huge international standing.

The winning work will feature either as part of one of the CREATE09 signature festivals and events, or as a stand-alone event. It could be a spectacular, large-scale finale or an artwork that that links to the community engagement programme in a more reflective way, creating a legacy for continued work. The final piece can be permanent or temporary, and the panellists welcome proposals from artists working in all types of media.

Judges for the CREATE 08 prize include Iwona Blazwick, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery; artist Jeremy Deller; and Director of arts company Artichoke, Helen Marriage. The commission will be made to the winning artist to coincide with the launch of the Cultural Olympiad on Friday 26th September 2008 with the artists work going on show in July 2009 as part of the festivities of CREATE09.

Judge Iwona Blazwick said:

“The CREATE Art Award is a fantastic addition to the cultural landscape of East and South East London. I’m looking forward to seeing the array of ideas that come in for our consideration. The cultural element of the Olympics is as important to the five boroughs as the Games themselves, and the CREATE Art Award is an essential part of that.”

Over the next four years the Host Boroughs are working together with leading arts organisations, venues and practitioners from across East and South East London to develop an internationally significant annual arts festival in the lead up to, and beyond, 2012. The total value of the CREATE Art commission is an inclusive fee of £40,000. This has been generously provided by Arts Council England.

Details of the award can be found at www.visiteastlondon.co.uk/visitors/create08.

Notes to Editors
• The CREATE Art Award is open to all artists who are not currently in education and who live or work in one of the five boroughs of Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.
• Individual artists and groups/organisations who are based in the five boroughs will be considered.
• The work must involve the participation of residents from all of the five host boroughs. As a guide, CREATE expect the active engagement of 20-50 residents from each of the five boroughs.
• The closing date for submissions is 1st August 2008.
• The CREATE Art Award’s partners are Arts Council England, the five host boroughs and the Whitechapel Gallery.
